Ha Giang and Thon Tha village

Day 2 afternoon (Ha Giang area):

The unexpected often surprises you a little more than the expected. The rice terraces around Ha Giang turned out to be unexpectedly pretty, though smaller in extent than those in Hoang Su Phi district. Lunch was a relaxed affair in Ha Giang after getting back from Hoang Su Phi, at a mid sized restaurant quite close to the bus terminus. My guide's friends happened to be there, and a good time was had by all.

We set off for the mountains and rice fields just outside Ha Giang town. The narrow roads were reasonably good in quality, winding around the mountain slopes as we climbed higher.

Being the end of the harvest season, villagers were hard at work, some with little children strapped on their backs. It's hard life, indeed!

Extremely pleasant views made up a lovely afternoon. It was cool, and the sun was behind clouds almost all the time.

Finally, the sun peeped out for just a few minutes!

And then the sun hid behind the clouds again as we headed to Thon Tha village.

Thon Tha is a model eco-village, very clean and tidy. Several home stays dot the area. Our stay that night would be at Cay's Homestay in a Tay minority village. There were about 15 guests on the floor, it felt like a vibrant community of travelers.

Dinner with our Tay family hosts was once again a huge spread with the ubiquitous corn wine or "happy water". Dinner typically lasts several hours as stories are told and experiences are shared.
                                                            .

Day 1 of the 4-day Ha Giang loop is described in the next post.

It was drizzling at 8 AM as we set off from Thon Tha village towards Quan Ba along highway QL4C. Just before we reached the mountains, it was time for a coffee break.
